A Tribute

David E. Yoder
January 20, 1997 was the day of my Grandpa's funeral (my mother's dad), just a couple weeks shy of his 93rd birthday! He was very much loved, and I still miss him. There was never a doubt that he loved his grandchildren - he was good at "spoiling" us. He always brought us treats when he came to visit and loved to tease us and make us laugh. He also loved to tease his wife, my Grandma. I still remember her fussing at him, and we'd all laugh and enjoy their fun.

He and Grandma got married in January, too. I think it was January 1, 1928. We celebrated with them on their 50th and 60th anniversaries. I think my Grandma died in December 1988. Then Grandpa lived another 9 years alone without her.

My grandparents with our 3 daughters.

One of the things that I learned about my grandpa after he died was that he read through the Bible every year. He had marked the front of his Bible with the date of each year. I had read through it myself a number of times, but hearing that about Grandpa inspired me to follow in his footsteps. I had read through the Bible a number of times before, but since I started keeping track it's been 9 years.

It seems like no matter how many times I read God's Word, there is always something new to treasure and learn about. One of the verses that meant a lot to me several years ago was Zechariah 9:16. (And how would I ever have found this verse? Who reads Zechariah?) Anyway, it has come to mean a lot to me because it speaks of God's great love for His children:

"...They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown." We're His trophies, we are valuable to Him. What a precious thought. That got me thinking that our own children are more precious to us than jewels. So I told Andy one Christmas that I wanted a ring made with the birthstones of each of our children, so I could wear them as visible trophies, reminders of how precious they each are.
We used to sing a song years and years ago:

When He cometh, When He cometh,
To make up His jewels,

All His jewels, precious jewels,

His loved and His own.

Like the stars of the morning,

His bright crown adorning,

They shall shine in their beauty

Bright gems for His crown.

He will gather, He will gather,
The gems for His kingdom,

All the pure ones, all the bright ones,

His loved and His own.

Like the stars of the morning,

His bright crown adorning,

They shall shine in their beauty,

Bright gems for His crown.

Little children, little children,

Who love their Redeemer,

Are the jewels, precious jewels,

His loved and His own.

Like the stars of the morning,

His bright crown adorning,

They shall shine in their beauty,

Bright gems for His crown.

I hope I can be as faithful in loving my grandchildren and passing along to them my love of God and His Word as my Grandpa was for me.

The Latest at the Wallins

I wrote about our anniversary but didn't mention that Andy gave me a special gift. He had given me a set of ruby earrings for Christmas. And anyone who knows me, knows how much I love RED! So I was thrilled to get the earrings from him.
Then when we were away for our anniversary, he surprised me by giving me a ruby bracelet. Isn't it gorgeous?!! I love it.
The Bible mentions rubies several times and compares their worth to the value of wisdom.

Proverbs 3:15 - [Wisdom] is more precious than rubies, nothing you desire can compare with her.
And Job 28:18 - ...the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.

We had a delightful evening last night with 3 German girls who are staying in our upstairs apartment right now. Here's the story:

Johanna is an au pair who is here in New Jersey on a work visa. Several months ago, Andy taught a class at church on baptism. Johanna attended and expressed a desire to get baptized. In the process, we became acquainted with her and enjoyed her company. She is very active in our Young Adult Ministry and loves our church. She has a sister and a friend who wanted to come to America to visit while she was here. She heard we had an apartment and asked if the 3 of them could stay with us while her sister and friend were visiting. We said yes, and here they are. We invited them to have dinner with us last night. What nice girls. Johanna herself is only 20, her sister is 24, and I'm not sure how old the friend is. They were happy to spend time with us, showing pictures of their families and friends, then asking about our children and grandchildren. They also wanted to hear our testimonies. Apparently, Johanna's parents are German, but moved to Russia after the war to escape persecution in Germany, because the family were extremely conservative Baptists. Russia wasn't much better because there you could be put in prison if you were caught with any literature with even a hint of Christianity. An uncle actually went to jail for 2 years for having a letter on himself that mentioned a Bible verse. The family moved back to Germany in 1978.

The girls arrived here on Friday, December 26th and will be leaving next Monday, January 11th. They are having a good time in America! The one girl said it's a dream to be here!

Andy worked on the porch again today and was able to finish the railing down the steps. There are only a few minor details left to do.
I didn't have to make dinner tonight. Andy's dad decided to make a salmon quiche and share it with us. It was so delicious - a special treat!

Out with the Old and In with the New

Happy 2009!

We stayed up later than usual on New Year's Eve, but still not till midnight! We attended an evening wedding on December 31. Rachel lived with us for 21 months several years ago, but got married this week. The wedding was at the church at 6:00 pm, then the reception was at the Flying W Restaurant about 10 minutes away. We had a good time because a lot of our friends were there.I had high hopes of accomplishing a lot this weekend with an extra day (New Year's Day). However, when I woke up on Thursday, I had no energy and a hint of a headache. As the day wore on, my headache got worse and I was sooo tired. Andy worked on the porch in the morning, but then he hit a snag and decided to call it a day. So we gathered up all our gift cards and went shopping. We stopped at Joseph A. Banks, Borders, Home Depot, Whole Foods and Wal-Mart.

We both worked all day yesterday at the office. I still had a headache and felt really tired. But fortunately, I felt better this morning. So since Andy was gone all morning (Nativity Take-Down), I felt it would be a good day to do some cleaning. When I mentioned this to a couple of people, they pooh-poohed the idea that my house was dirty. Well, as I was cleaning, I found wadded up Christmas wrapping behind the couch. I also found toys/cars under the furniture - left overs from family partying! There were crumbs and all kinds of other reminders of the fun times we had the last couple of weeks here. Happy memories made it enjoyable to work today.

I did a lot of laundry, dusted the furniture, then dust mopped under the living room furniture. I started vacuuming, but the vacuum didn't seem to be working. After changing the bag, it still didn't seem to work. On further investigation, I discovered it was not picking up the dirt, only moving it around. So now I had to take the vacuum cleaner to the repair shop. They said it was clogged and needed a few new parts and I needed to leave it till next Wednesday. Sigh! So much for my big plans of getting everything cleaned up around here.

While I was working away this morning, I took several breaks. I had a visit from my neighbor and good friend, Ruth. We visited for about an hour, catching up on Christmas happenings with our families. Mom also visited me a couple of times throughout the day.

When Andy came home around 2:00 pm, we went out to the patio and raked and swept up all the leaves that had accumulated in that corner from all the wind of the last couple of days. We also took out a couple of strings of lights that had burned out on the bushes and replaced them. It sure looks nice out there at nighttime.

Dawn came over for dinner tonight. She's also staying overnight because she's singing on the worship team tomorrow morning. I made Barbeque Chicken Pizza for dinner which made her and Andy (and myself!) very happy. Yummy!

In case anyone's interested, it's a simple recipe:

1 ready made crust from Trader Joe's
2/3 cup of Trader Joe's bold and smoky Kansas City barbeque sauce
chicken, cooked and diced
6 scallions, chopped fine
gouda cheese
mozzarella cheese

I mix the barbeque sauce, scallions and chicken together, then spread on the crust. Top with the cheeses and bake about 10-15 minutes.

We only had one little piece left.

Our Anniversary

Yesterday, December 29, it was 35 years that we've been married.

Who could have known when we set the date for 4 days after Christmas that 35 years later it would be a good time to get away! Between Christmas and New Year's has been great every year for some down time. Since moving back to NJ 22 years ago, we discovered Walnut Valley in Lancaster County, a quiet little spot that brings back peace to the soul. So we spent 2 1/2 days there - just chillin'.
I read through 2 whole books, plus we took a hike in Pa. state gamelands nearby and went out to eat at Lily's in Ephrata - a nice restaurant with ambiance.

When life is busy with lots of stress
Where can we go to find God's caress?
A place to reflect and be restored,
Back to the loving arms of our Lord?

Party Time

It seems like we've had more parties than usual this December.

On the 17th, we had a Christmas lunch and gift exchange at the office with most of the staff - pastors, secretaries, interns. There were 16 present at that. I organized the meal but had help from the ladies and girls. The food included: hot turkey and cheese sandwiches, tortilla soup, a variety of salads and a beautiful display of different kinds of Christmas cookies.

I only worked 2 days on Christmas week: Monday and Wednesday. And Wednesday was surprisingly quiet so I was able to get everything done with time to spare. We had 2 Christmas Eve services this year and both were well attended. The church was full both times. I love that service each year - simple yet meaningful, remembering the birth of our dear Lord.

I puttered in the kitchen all Christmas day. Andy and I were by ourselves with occasional visits from his Mom and Dad. They went to a son's family's house for Christmas brunch, and another son's for Christmas dinner. Andy worked a little on the front porch and finished the railing around it. It was a beautiful day, absolutely no breeze with a brilliant sun, so we were able to relax a little in mid-day. With the sun shining on the front of the house, we didn't even need our coats on.In between relaxing, I cooked the Christmas turkey, made 3 batches of rolls (6 dozen), made a cheese ball, set the tables, etc...getting ready for our family dinner on Friday.

The girls and their families arrived late morning on Friday for our Wallin family gathering. We ate dinner at noon, then opened presents and enjoyed being together.

What a blessing a loving, accepting family is. How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! (Psalm 133:1)

Then on Saturday off we went to another party. This one at my brother's north of Reading, PA. All of our girls and their families were there again, as well as a nephew (and family) from Texas, a niece (and family) from California, another nephew (and family) from New York, a niece from D.C. area, a nephew on leave from the service, etc. It was a huge gathering and very good to be with some of these relatives whom we hadn't seen for a number of years.

I had a conversation with a great nephew from Texas. I asked him if he knew who I was. He said, "No." I told him I was his grandpa's sister. He looked shocked. He had no idea his grandpa had a sister. Then I told him that he and Grace (we were all playing a game together) were second cousins. Neither Grace nor Jordan had any idea they were related and wondered what a second cousin was.

I'm very thankful for all my brothers and sisters, their children and grandchildren, and for the privilege we have of getting together and enjoying one another's fellowship. So are the parties over? Will this be a quiet week? Well, as you can see by the Daisy Counter, we celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary tomorrow! Quite a milestone! We will be celebrating, but I'll report on that later.

Merry Christmas!

While they were [in Bethlehem], the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6 & 7)

I love this picture.

Remember all the feelings that you experienced when your first child was born! How tender, how loving you felt toward this precious little one. Now imagine how much more Mary's feelings were magnified when she thought about giving birth to the LORD, naming Him Jesus because He would save His people from their sins!

AWESOME!

Baby, it's cold outside!

Do you think global warming is taking a break this year?

Brrr! Sunday morning when we got up, there was ice everywhere. I'm very thankful I can park my car in the garage because I don't have to scrape ice or snow off the windows before taking off. When I got to church the phones were ringing with people calling to ask if church was canceled. We rarely cancel (never say "never"), in fact, we still had all three services. Attendance was down by only 100 or so - 1,100 this week. I took some pictures, but I'm almost embarrassed to post them after looking at Christian's. They had a lot more ice than we did here in NJ.

Just for kicks and grins, I watched the temperature on my car thermometer yesterday morning as I drove to work. When I got in the car (in the garage), the temperature was 46 degrees. One mile/two minutes later as I pulled into the church parking lot, the temp had gone down to 24 degrees. And it was actually 19 degrees. I was glad to get into the nice warm office.

The water in our pond is pretty low right now, but what is there is frozen.
Andy made a lot of progress on our front porch today. It was so cold, I don't know how he could stand it, but he worked all day till around 3:00. Then, believe it or not, he went for a bike ride. He came back from that pretty frozen!
Isn't it looking good!
